Chapter Seven

Sekani shifted on the stool’s cushion. Looking around the large kitchen, he took in all the colors and shiny surfaces. He tightened his folded hands, uncertain if he was allowed to touch anything but wanting to so badly.

“You okay there, little buddy?” Zakhar asked.

After ending the call with Jared in the office, Nikolai had said that he’d round up the others. Borscht had told him he’d be there soon. He’d brought Sekani here and introduced him to Zakhar. After telling his brother to help him to find what kinds of foods he enjoyed, Borscht had given Sekani a kiss and told him he’d be back soon.

“Um, yeah,” Sekani whispered. He flattened one of his hands on the counter. “Smooth,” he commented, rubbing over the funny-colored surface.

“It’s a stone called marble,” Zakhar told him. He placed a bowl full of a brown liquid on the counter and slid it toward Sekani. “This is called beef stew. Give it a try.”

Sekani stared down at it. The bowl was full of brown liquid. Floating in the liquid were tiny pieces of what he assumed was food. The small ones were orange and green, then there were larger chunks of white and brown. He hadn’t been given a lot of meat, but he recognized the brown chunks as the beef in the name. Dipping his fingers into the liquid, Sekani picked out a chunk of white. He stared at it for a few seconds, letting most of the brown liquid drip off it, then popped it into his mouth.

Flavors Sekani couldn’t even begin to describe burst across his tongue. Humming, he dipped his fingers into the broth again and pulled out a piece of the meat. As he chewed on it, a happy smile on his face, he heard Zakhar chuckle.

Looking up from the food, Sekani watched the man slide a small plate with a piece of bread on it toward him. On the piece of bread, there was some kind of yellow stuff spread across it. Sekani dabbed his finger into it, then brought it to his nose and sniffed. Not certain what he was smelling, he glanced at Zakhar.

“It’s butter,” Zakhar told him softly. “It’s spread on bread to make it sweeter.”

Sekani stuck his finger into his mouth. Upon tasting it, he wrinkled his brow. He wasn’t certain if he liked it or not.

“It tastes better on the bread,” Zakhar assured. “Also, use the spoon to scoop up the chunks in the stew,” he ordered softly, sliding a metal item toward him. “That way you won’t get your fingers wet.”

Picking up the item, Sekani held it up. There was a long slender piece of metal attached to a small, shallow, oblong bowl. “How, um—” Sekani hunched his shoulders and peered at Zakhar uncertainly. “I’ve never—”

Zakhar rounded the counter. “Ah, I understand,” he rumbled softly. He stopped beside Sekani’s stool and gently pulled the spoon from his grip. “If you allow it, I will show you.”

Sekani nodded slowly, relieved Zakhar didn’t look at him like he was an idiot.
